For a fabulous ‘50s party, consider the following themes: '50s
diner theme, drive-in theme, Elvis party theme, Grease party theme, or sock
hop. Once the theme choice is settled, send out matching invitations. Get
creative by sending out '50s music records or a CD.
Decorate your party venue with a '50s backdrop, '50s
cutouts, old records, plastic music notes, Mylar balloons, and a
cardboard jukebox. You can also host the party at a bowling alley or rent out a
roller rink.
Dress in ‘50s fashions, including leather jackets with white
t-shirts, bowling shirts, bobby socks, poodle or polka dotskirts, Pink Lady
jackets, rock-and-roll sunglasses. Guests can also dress as '50s icons, like Elvis
Presley or Marilyn Monroe.
Make your "nifty fifties" night a blast with a hula-hoop contest, a
dance-off, or a bubble gum-blowing contest. Hire an Elvis impersonator or
wear a costume to drive the crowd wild and provide a ton of photo-ops. Add
to the ‘50s nostalgia by watching Grease, "I Love
Lucy" or "Happy Days,” and get in the dancing mood with music by Miles
Davis, Buddy Holly, Johnny Cash, Fabian, Frankie Avalon, Dion, Bobby Darrin,
the Platters, or Elvis.
Consider American favorites like burgers and fries, shakes,
root-beer floats, sodas, apple pies and ice-cream sundaes as food options
for the party. Use '50s-theme plates, napkins, cups, and table covers, which
are available at party stores or online.
